There are a large number of “ghost types” and it is important to understand what they are. If you know what they are, it might put your mind at ease about your haunting, if you know what it is.

Below, you will find brief explanations of some of the different types of “ghosts” along with the basic characteristics of each type. It is important to know that the explanations below are the current thoughts (or theories) on the types listed, and may be subject to change as new discoveries, and theories, are made.

Shadow People (Dark Masses)

Appearance and Characteristics:

These types usually appear as a “shadow” or “dark mass”. They are generally evasive, and tend to be seen “out of the corner of the eye”, and can often be spotted in mirrors. Sightings range from two feet in height and up, and are generally reported to travel at a height of two to ten feet. It is very easy to mistake a “Shadow Person / Dark Mass” in photographs, as more often than not, it is a natural shadow from an object within the photographed area.

Locations spotted:

This type has been reported to be seen almost anywhere.

Speculations:

The theory is that this type is a ghost in one of their many forms.

Apparitions

Appearance and Characteristics:

Apparitions are generally classified as the front on visual of a spirit / ghost. An apparition can come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from “full bodied” to “partial” apparitions.

Apparitions can be partially transparent, incomplete, even complete. Apparitions can also appear to look, sound like and appear like another living person to the point where you don’t know the difference, till the apparition disappears!

Apparitions generally appear to be wearing clothing from their period.

For most of us, seeing an apparition is a rare thing, but can be “part of the norm” for gifted psychics.

To catch an apparition on video, or in a picture is the “holy grail” for a paranormal investigator, but unfortunately rarely happens.

Locations spotted:

This type has been reported to be seen almost anywhere.

Speculations:

It is unclear why apparitions are able to manifest when they do. As Paranormal Research is still really in its infancy, there are many theories, but to try and state exactly what the reason is would be pure speculation. The truth is, we just do not know.

Cold Spots

Appearance and Characteristics:

Cold Spots are spots that appear colder than its surrounding area. They can appear right next to you, where you feel an area within the room that you are in that is very cold, but if you take a step or two, it feels like the rest of the room, step back towards the spot, and it is cold again.

Cold Spots can move around.

Locations spotted:

This type has been reported to be seen almost anywhere.

Speculations:

It is believed that cold spots are possibly an entity trying to manifest itself.

Orbs (Balls of Light, Spheres, Globes)

Appearance and Characteristics:

Orbs generally appear as “balls of light” that float around.

Orbs are by far one of the most debated anomalies captured by paranormal investigators.

The reason they are highly debated is that there are just far too many possibilities that an “orb” can show up in an image or video. Dust floating about reflecting light, water vapours, gaseous vapours, light flares, flash flares, to name just a few things that can be mistaken for a “ghostly orb”. Some digital cameras can also produce “false orbs” as well.

There are most certainly “ghostly orbs” that show up as well, but with over 95% of “orbs” captured in an image being able to be written off as something like those listed above, most paranormal investigators tend to ignore orbs.

Locations spotted:

This type has been reported to be seen almost anywhere.

Speculations:

We believe that an actual “ghost orb” will emanate it’s OWN light, also illuminating the area close to the “orb”. We also believe that a true “ghost orb” does NOT reflect light, if the object you are seeing is reflecting light, then chances are it is something completely natural and NOT a “ghost orb”. Natural explanations such as dust, dirt, moisture, light flare, fog, rain, bugs, insects, litter, cotton/fluff, just to name a few. There are many other theories about orbs, but we will leave it there for now.
